The Glorious Journey of Bandarawela Vishaka Girls’ College
The proud heritage of Bandarawela Vishaka Girls’ College is deeply rooted in the noble lineage of the Vishaka Vidyalaya tradition in Sri Lanka. Since its establishment on 19th March 1942, the college has grown steadily, nurturing generations of young women with a strong foundation in academics, values, and leadership. Over the decades, it has become a beacon of education, fostering talent, creativity, and a spirit of community service. Its commitment to excellence has shaped countless students into confident, empowered individuals who continue to contribute meaningfully to society. Through its rich history and enduring traditions, the college proudly upholds the vision of holistic education and personal growth for every student.
The vision of Vishaka Girls’ College was to provide exceptional education to young women, equipping them with the knowledge, courage, and moral strength to become leaders in society. Guided by the exemplary character of its founders, the school has continually emphasized holistic development — academic, cultural, and ethical.
From its humble beginnings in a leased building in Colombo, the institution embraced a philosophy of excellence, nurturing each student to fulfill her highest potential in national and international arenas.
In 1927, the school underwent major reconstruction funded by Mrs. Sirger Berty Stanly, marking the largest private educational donation in Sri Lanka at the time. This significant step reinforced the school’s foundation and established its commitment to excellence for generations to come.
Over the decades, the school expanded its facilities, introduced modern curricula, and embraced new teaching methodologies, shaping itself into a progressive institution aligned with national educational goals.
Located in Bandarawela, the school has consistently nurtured disciplined, talented, and patriotic young women. Upholding the school anthem’s spirit — “With knowledge, wisdom, and courage” — generations of daughters of Vishaka have emerged as proud leaders serving the nation and the world.
On 1st March 1961, the school was vested in the Government and elevated to the status of a Central College, strengthening its mission to cultivate national and international leaders.
On 21st October 1993, the college became a National School, and in 2014 it was further elevated to a Super School (Super A), embracing modern technology and empowering young women for the future.
